Scramble for the Gen Z and Mt Kenya votes as political temperatures rise

A powerful message where Uhuru Kenyatta urged the Gen Zs to fearlessly fight for their rights has left friend and foe of the retired president intrigued even as political temperatures keep rising in his backyard of Mt Kenya.

A day after three of his allies were sworn in as Cabinet Secretaries namely Mutahi Kagwe (Livestock), Lee Kinyanjui (Trade) and William Kabogo (ICT) Uhuru stunned many when promised to back the Gen Zs in their fight against the government.

Without mincing words Uhuru told the gathering that included his own daughter Ngina not to be cowed and fight for their rights and properties reminding them that they are the one’s with the energy to do so.

“Gen Zs is the story of the future. Why are you afraid. Fight for your rights. Do no just sit there as your property gets looted. Do not accept. Fight hard for your rights. Are you listening? Everything is worth a fight for, Stand up and fight for your rights” Uhuru said.

And as this was going on, back in Mt Kenya a three-way political fight was shaping up pitting current DP Kithure Kindiki on the East Side, while former DP Rigathi Gachagua was locking horns with former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

Kindiki has been working to consolidate the Mt Kenya East and has so far met MPs from Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nthi and most recently met leaders from Embu County led by their governor Cess Mbarire.

His efforts to unite region and control it are however meeting resistance with Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga wondering how Kindiki will unite the region if he is unable to go to the ground and meet the people and was only meeting them indoors at his residence.

And the battle between Maina and Gachagua took a dramatic turn on Saturday after the former Mungiki leader with a group of youths stormed a prayer meeting held in Nyeri and where Pastor Dorcas Gachagua (wife to former DP) was also in attendance.

Pastor Dorcas fled the scene as soon as Maina arrived in a boisterous manner and took space at the high table momentarily bringing the proceedings to a stop.

Maina later addressed the media and said he had come for prayers just like any other person but observers were keen to note that he was enjoying State protection.

Gachagua later released a statement condemning the incident and blamed the government for “unleashing” Maina to disrupt prayers as a desperate act.

“Unleasing the leader of an outlawed criminal gang and his goons to disrupt peaceful prayers and desecrate the alter, is the lowest any government can go no matter the level of desperation,” said Gachagua in a statement.

Gachagua announced that he would be attending a church service at Matanya in Laikipia and where again Main said he would also be attending creating fear of a looming confrontation.
