Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya says his focus is on winning back the Meru governor seat in 2027 and is not interested in joining President Ruto’s broad-based government.
Speaking at the PNU headquarters on Wednesday after chairing the party’s National Executive Committe (NEC) meeting, Munya said he no intention of accepting any government appointment, stating that his only political ambition is to return to the county leadership.
Word had been going round that he had on several occasions been requested by President Ruto to join his government, but Munya clarified that he had not been offered any job by Ruto and would automatically decline such an offer.
“For avoidance of doubt, I am focusing on running for the Meru governor seat in the coming elections. I want to make it very clear that I am not looking for any other job; the job I am only looking for is the Governor of Meru,” Munya stated.
“I don’t have the time or luxury to serve in any other position. I have not been offered any other job by anyone, and even if I am offered, I will not accept.” Munya said.
While on his tour of Meru recently, President Ruto said that there were already in talks with Munya and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi and asked Meru people to be patient as something good was cooking.
Mithika who was fired as Agriculture CS by Ruto after the Gen Z riots last year, was the first to deny existence of such talks and now Munya has also said he has not been approached by anyone negating what the President had claimed.
Munya said PNU remains focused on national unity and will remain strong and guided by its founding values and will field candidates in all positions come the 2027 general elections.
Munya indicated that even though PNU will be open to working with like-minded parties, the decision on whether to support a joint presidential candidate or front their own will depend on shared aspirations.
“As PNU, our foundational values are that Kenya is one country and one nation. Anything that goes against that, PNU is always against. We intend to field candidates for each and every elective seat,” said Munya.
He however clarified that PNU was ready to work with other parties that share same aspirations to either field a joint presidential candidate or field a candidate on our own.” ,” he said.
