East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through the group CEO Jane Karuku has received an award in recognitions of the efforts the brewer has made in water conservation and the environment.
Water stewardship sits at the heart of EABL, because water is one of the most critical resources in their brewing business.
The Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund Trust -Nairobi Water Fund Trust recently marked 10 years of sustained investment in conserving the Upper Tana Watershed – a vital resource that supplies 95% of Nairobi’s water and generates 65% of Kenya’s hydropower.
As Africa’s first water fund, the Trust was founded on a simple principle: it is cheaper to prevent water problems at the source than to solve them downstream.
Ms Karuku, who is a member of the UNWFT’s Board of Trustees, said EABL is proud to be a long-term partner and investor in the fund, in line with our Spirit of Progress Sustainability agenda.
“The impact of this work goes beyond water and the environment. It strengthens livelihoods, creates jobs, and underpins economic stability demonstrating the power of collective action,” she noted.
She said EABL was grateful to receive an award recognizing our contribution to advancing water stewardship through the Trust.

Over a decade of collaboration between government, utilities, businesses and farming communities, the Trust has delivered significant results:
- 470,000 acres of farms and forests and 980 kilometres of rivers are now under improved sustainable management
- 260,000 farmers have adopted climate-resilient land practices, including 17,000 water pans harvesting over 2 billion litres of rainwater annually
- 5.9 million trees planted
- 22,000 green jobs created
- US$118 million in additional income generated for farmers through fruit, nut and livestock feed value chains
She said the progress was immensely encouraging and that they look forward to another decade of impact and to strengthening the public-private partnerships that safeguard water security, livelihoods and the environment.
