Ten dead, thirteen rescued as KDF chopper crashes, explodes into a ball of fire

Ten passengers were killed and thirteen were rescued after a training military helicopter crashed early morning on Thursday at Ol Tepesi in Kajiado County.

Reports indicate that the injured were airlifted to Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi after the chopper Mi 171e model burst into flames on crash landing.

A statement by KDF signed by Col Zipporah K Kioko, while confirming the deaths, said they were in process of communicating with the families affected.

“Regrettably, following the crash, we suffered fatalities. The process of communicating with the families to relay the information and KDF condolences are underway,’’ said Col Kioko.

The statement further added that aircraft accident investigators are also at the crash site to establish the cause of the accident.

Col Kioko said the entire KDF thanked the locals and all the first responders for their assistance during the rescue.

The cause of the horrific accident was not immediately revealed but investigations were said to be under way.

An earlier statement by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) on the aircraft crash said, ‘’today at around 0900hrs, an Mi 171e Air Force Helicopter, on training mission crash landed at the Ol Tepesi area in Ngong, Kajiado County. Rescue missions are underway.’’
