Kiambu County Commissioner Wanyanga stops suspicious cryptocurrency recruitment in Kahawa Wendani

Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Wanyaga has stopped with immediate effect the ongoing recruitment of Kiambu residents by some individuals posing as ‘agents’ of World Coin, a virtual currency in Kahawa Wendani .

Wanyanga warned Kiambu residents not to fall prey to get -rich -quick schemes that are likely to leave many in tears. The recruitment exercise according to the ‘agents’ was supposed to be completed on December 22 and they were targeting to register 5 million people.

“I have ordered the exercise to be stopped immediately. We can’t understand why people who are registering are being given money. We suspect that the data could be used for sinister motives,” Wanyanga warned.

The recruitment exercise for the World coin started two weeks ago at the Kahawa Wendani Police Post which also houses the area chief’s office and as of yesterday several people drawn as far as from Dandora, Kibera, Mathare North, Gatundu South among other areas were flocking to Kahawa Wendani for registration.

As early as 6.00am mothers with babies on their backs have been withstanding the morning rains in order to be registered and be paid Sh 50 by the virtual currency ‘agents’.

During the alleged recruitment one is required to have a smartphone and to be successfully registered you are supposed to give to the ‘agents’ your phone number, Identity Card number and your email. Those who do not have smartphones could still be registered using an ‘internal mechanism’ known by the agents and in return they are paid Sh 50.

According to those who have already been registered but refused to go on record, they have been promised by the recruitment ‘agents’ that they will start receiving $25 dollars into the app that has been installed in their phones as of February 2022.

“I was told by one of the agents that after registration I will start receiving the money in the World Coin app wallet as from February. I was also promised that I will also start earning interest as the money multiplies and am looking forward to the windfall,” said the Dandora resident who gave his name as Kinyanjui.

Kenyans have been falling prey to schemes to get rich quick schemes and end up becoming the victim hence losing their hard earned money to fraud schemes.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has in the past issued a warning to Kenyans on holding and trading of virtual currencies

Worldcoin was launched on October 21 and according to its co-founders the scheme promises to give free crypto to those who verify their accounts using an eye scan. The firm hopes to develop their cryptocurrency into a global, fairly distributed electronic currency.
