Scared of facing angry Kenyans, scores of MPs reject latest pay rise

A new pay rise for Members of Parliament (MPs) and other State Officers has met angry reactions from Kenyans.

Suffering under the heavy weight of increased cost of living, Kenyans have dismissed the latest pay rise by 14.5% as a rude slap on the face.

And reading the angry mood from irate Kenyans, several MPs have quickly rejected the payrise saying they do not need the money and that the timing was wrong.

Some MPs suggested that the timing was suspect and looked like a set up so that they can be beaten to a pulp by angry Kenyans.

The pay rise came in the middle of protests called by Gen Z where one of the demands was the largese and opulence shown by government at a time majority of Kenyans were sleeping hungry.

Nairobi Senator and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said it was ridiculous for the Salaries and Renumerations Commission (SRC) to increase the pay before addressing other critical cadres of civil servants.

He said he does not need the money and told SRC should actually be looking into ways of reducing the wage bill and not increasing it.

Other MPs said they had not requested for a pay hike and were caught by surprise and denounced the increase.

The pay rise puts the MPs on the spot light again only days after majority angered the public for passing the draconian Finance Bill that has since been rejected.

Majority of the MPs who passed the Bill have faced the wrath of their constituents some who have had their homes and offices torched and burnt to ashes.

They are now living in fear and cannot dare visit their constituencies and the pay rise will only make a dangerous situation worse.
