Ruto orders purchase of livestock from communities severely affected by drought – CS Linturi

President Ruto has directed National Treasury to commence livestock off-take programme in 13 drought stricken Counties from next week.

The livestock off-take initiative that’s aimed at cushioning farmers due to the prolonged drought will be done in conjunction with the Kenya Meat Commission to guarantee safety of the meat.

Agriculture and Livestock development CS Mithika Linturi made the announcement when he led a fact finding mission to check on the state of farmers in Kajiado County.

He was accompanied by Livestock PS Harry Kimutai, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, area Senator Samuel Seki among other Government officials.

The team visited Sajiloni and Isinya livestock markets and saw first hand the sad affair facing livestock farmers due to the high number of livestock deaths caused by the prolonged drought.

“My Ministry will continue with efforts to find a long lasting solution on the matter by introducing improved technology on farming and also introduce drought resistant crops in semi arid and arid areas of the country in o mitigate effects of drought,” said Linturi.

He said the Government will continue with mitigation efforts to help communities severely affected by the ravaging drought.
