Maverick student leader Steve Chege buried in Nyandarua as President Ruto describes him as selfless and visionary

We are heartbroken by the death of Steve Chege. Steve was a selfless and visionary who attended to community issues with distinction. Steve was full fresh ideas and thoughts on how to help the under-privileged. He was key in advancing the youth agenda and has left behind a monumental legacy,” – President William Ruto in his condolence message.

Maverick student and famous youth leader Steve Chege was laid to rest in Kasuku, Oljororok, Nyandarua County in an emotional ceremony attended by a battery of politicians and thousands of mourners.

The country’s top leadership led by President William Ruto sent condolences and monetary support to Chege’s young family – a wife and a 5-month-old son – and promised to assist the mother living a humble life at Maina village in Laikipia.

President Ruto in his message read by Nyandarua Senator Penninah Methu said Chege was a visionary leader full of fresh ideas on how to improve the lives of the poor and how to advance the inclusion of the youth in national leadership.

He said Chege was a champion and vocal voice for the youth who leaves behind a monumental legacy.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also sent his condolences to Chege who was among the people who marketed the Azimio Presidential candidate in Mt Kenya region.

Chege died on Monday morning following a grisly road accident the previous day said to have occurred when he swerved to avoid hitting a boda boda that was riding on the wrong side of the road.

Inspite of his huge influence across the political divides, Chege a son of a single mother, hailed from an extremely humble backgroud and it has taken sheer grit and courage to rise to such high levels at such a young age.

After his admission to University of Nairobi, Chege used to hawk eggs and samosa at Kasarani and Zimmerman estates to raise money for upkeep and fees.

Such is their humble background that Chege was buried at his auntie’s shamba because his mother has no land hence the outpouring of pledges by leaders present to buy land and settle her and the other siblings.

Gatundu North MP Elijah Kururia who happens to be a neighbor of Chege’s wife has promised to get her a job and a plot in Ruiru to settle her in the memory of Chege who had many friends across the political divide.

The leaders are planning a fundraiser next week so that they can fulfil all the pledges that have been made.
