Kenyans mark a strange Easter holiday under lockdown due to covid-19.

The annual urban-rural migration where thousands of Kenyans scramble for transport upcountry is nowhere to be seen.

Bus stops are dead silent, the rowdy and noisy touts all missing and the blazing of horns and roaring engines completely muted.

Churches are locked, no bells tolling, no loudspeakers, no choirs no praise and worship. It is all silent.

It is a solemn as the crucification of Jesus Christ whose death and resurrection Easter is all about and the key pillar of Christianity.

Indeed these are strange and trying moments brought about the deadly Corona and the eruption of the third wave that is killing more than 10 Kenyans daily.

To underline the level of seriousness, Nyeri Arch-bishop Antony Muheria has cancelled the Way of the Cross – an important procession that reminds Christians of the way to the crucifiction of Jesus of Nazareth.

Traditionally, Kenyans use the long Easter weekend to travel upcountry to be with their relatives and friends.

They also use the break to treat themselves or families to holiday with coast being a major attraction.

But with five of the richest counties under lockdown, all these become distant memories of bygone times.
