Steve Chege’s shocking death unites UDA and Azimio youths

Youths expressed shock that Chege died so suddenly and at 30, just when his star appeared to shine. The thought of his young wife and 5-month-old son left many in tears

Azimio and UDA youths were united in grief as they came together to plan a beffiting send off of one of their own – Steve Chege.

Politicals differences and standpoints were set aside as former “bitter enemies” were brought together by Chege’s death on Monday.

Chege, a maverick student leader and former Laikipia Senatorial aspirant was mourned far and wide underlining just how famous and influential he was.

He was mourned as a young ambitious man whose rapport cut across party lines and age groups.

On Thursday night, Chege’s vigil was attended by top leaders from both sides some who could not see eye to eye barely two months ago.

A strong reconciliation and unity chord was struck with speakers expressing happiness at the great show of solidarity.

Murang’a County Woman Rep Betty Maina of UDA shared the front row with nominated MP Sabina Chege, while abrasive UDA MCA Kiruga Thuku shared light moments with Azimio youths.

Digital Strategist and self styled Hustler Movement Spokesperson Dennis Itumbi was joined by his RADICO political group who contributed Sh 100,000 to the funeral budget.

Itumbi and Kiruga also conducted an impromtu harambee that raised another Sh 100,000.

Hon Sabina praised the unity showed by the youths for breaking political barriers and coming together for a common purpose – saying that has always been her message.

She brought a donation of Sh 200,000 from Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga a personal donation of Sh 50,000.

Sabina promised to get in touch with retired President Uhuru to brief him on the burial preparations.

While urging the youth to unite and work togther, Itumbi said a time has come when they should make one of their own the president of Kenya.

He said it is the youth who are normally hired to make others president noting that Kenya’s youth contributed greatly in producing President Uhuru and President Ruto.

“Iam ready to convene the first meeting where we can start the conversation about making one of our own president,” said Itumbi.

Sabina said she was saddened by the abrupt death of Chege and that they will work with wellwishers to support his family and the mother who all depended on him.

Itumbi on his part promised Sh10,000 every month for three years  to Chege’s family reminiscing how Chege once rescued the day when he (Itumbi) was holding his popular chapati forums.
