Storm over the firing of celebrity radio presenter Shaffie Weru

The Homeboyz Radio has fired celebrity radio presenter Shaffie Weru and his two colleagues over what has been termed as promotion of gender violence.
Weru was fired alongside Joseph Munoru (DJ Mfalme) and Neville Musa after a “comprehensive review of the comments made on the station on Thursday morning,’’ said a statement signed by Somoina Kimojino the General Manager of Homeboyz Radio.
The comments immediately ignited a major backlash starting with the East African Breweries (EABL) who drastically announced stoppage of all advertisements with the station until appropriate action is done.
The radio station owned by the Radio Africa Group responded immediately by firing the three adding that, ‘’the company and its subsidiaries do not condone gender based violence or any form of physical, verbal and emotional abuse nor does it subscribe to the view shared by the three employees.’’
And before the dust settled the Communication Authority (CA) who licenses the radio station came out strongly and fined the radio station Sh 1 million and ordered the three employees to undergo gender sensitive training.
CA also banned the breakfast show for six months and that the station publish an apology in two leading newspapers for five days and asked the station to review its editorial policy and align it with the requirements of the law on gender, and file the same with the Authority.
And as things quickly went south for the trio and their station, their supporters started a campaign seeking to boycott the products of EABL accusing it of using too much force to deal with a “small matter”.
Fans of Weru further said the radio presenters were being treated unfairly because they were male saying that boy-child continues to be humiliated at the expense of the girl-child.
The issue has created a major storm in the social media with supporters of Weru and those opposed trading barbs.
