Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua flags off subsidized fertlizer for tea farmers under KTDA

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has flagged off the 2nd consignment of the 88,000 metric tonnes of NPK subsidized fertilizer destined to smallholder tea growers across the country

A total of 62 trucks, each carrying at least 100 bags, left the Syokimau Nairobi Freight Terminus to deliver the fertiliser to respective factories.

“We gave a commitment to the people of Kenya that within one year, farmers will earn from their sweat and get compensated for their work,” said Gachagua

KTDA (H) chairman David Ichoho , KTDA board,GCEO Wilson Muthaura were also present and several directors among them John Wasusana.

The ship carrying the balance of 44,000 metric tonnes (44 Million kgs) of fertiliser docked at the port on Monday 17th October.

The fertiliser was packaged on site and transported to farmers upcountry.

The first consignment of 40,550 metric tonnes arrived on 19th August, 2022, and has already been distributed to farmers.

According to KTDA, the total consignment of 88,000 metric tonnes of the NPK 26:5:5 chemically compounded fertilizer was procured directly from Russia.

KTDA procures fertilizer in bulk for more than 630,000 small scale tea farmers, who are the shareholders of its managed factories, through competitive international bidding.

The fertiliser is distributed to the farmers through their respective factory companies.
