Cholera outbreak hits Kiambu, six other counties under threat

The Ministry of Health has warned about the outbreak of cholera in six counties after.

In a statement, the director of health, Dr. Patrick Amoth said the outbreak follows a wedding ceremony organized in Kiambu county.

He said that among the 61 reported cases, 13 patients have been hospitalized, eight have been allowed to go home, while 40 have been treated and left the hospital.

“The Ministry of Health has confirmed the outbreak of cholera in six counties, following a wedding ceremony in Kiambu county,” said Dr. Amoth.

Giving that warning, Dr. Amoth confirmed that Kiambu county recorded 31 cases followed by Nairobi with 17 cases.

Kajiado and Nakuru counties have confirmed two cases each, while Uasin Gishu has eight cases. Murang’a has one cholera patient.

The Ministry of Health has initiated surveillance efforts to control the disease.

The ministry has alerted all counties, saying that the ongoing drought may worsen the situation.

Cholera is a dangerous diarrhea disease caused by eating food or drinking water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

The disease affects children and even adults and can kill within hours, if left untreated.
