CBO Green Spaces leads partners in planting of Over 4,500 trees planted at the Thiba Dam

A community-based organization – Green Spaces – together with partners has planted over 4,500 trees at the Thiba Dam in Kirinyaga County whose water is used to irrigate the Mwea rice fields downstream.

The well attended event saw members of the local community join hands in planting the trees with aim of protecting the important water reservoir and the general environment.

The founder of Green Spaces Shujaa Julie Wanja said they will be back in October to plant more trees which will include fruit trees, medicinal trees and herbs and indigenous trees so as to ensure the ecology is well balanced, protect and conserve the environment.

She said the overall plan is to create an arboretum around Thiba Dam with a wide variety of trees well named trees where students, community members, and even researchers can visit and learn more about nature and environment. They can also enjoy tranquil nature walks.

“We planted 4,500 trees and we have a sustainability program to grow them with an aim at 95% survival rate. We shall have Season Two of planting in October this year. We want to create a beautiful and natural aboretum as we conserve and protect the environment,” said Shujaa Wanja.

She thanked members of the community, partners and the patrons of Green Spaces who included Senior Council Wachira Kibanya, Alister Murimi, Beato Migwi and Dr Jason Chewa for the successful.
