GEMA mourns Raila Odinga, describes him as a brave reformist and a true fighter for justice

The GEMA Cultural Association that brings together the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Kamba communities has expressed sadness at the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga terming it a big loss.

Addressing the media in Nairobi, GEMA described Raila as towering icon of democracy who has bravely fought and suffered deeply for the expansion of Kenya’s democratic space and freedoms currently being enjoyed.

Led by their chairman Bishop Lawi Imathiu, the Association’s leaders urged Kenyans to remain united, love one another and maintain peace as the country reflects on the life and legacy of the veteran statesman.

They termed the demise of Raila as both shocking and sad while sending their condolences to his wife Ida and the family, the ODM fraternity and the country at large.

While honoring Raila, Bishop Imathiu said the work of the late former Prime minister in the social, economic, governance and political sector was distinct and immense.

“The former prime minister was always championing for reforms, good governance and mostly the expansion of the Democratic space and freedom which Kenyans enjoy today,” said Bishop Imathiu.

He said Raila exhibited rare bravery and drive in the face of dictatorship, mistreatment and alienation from his family which he faced during detention.

“He was selfless and resilient in the pursuit of peace, prosperity, rule of law and constitutionalism and freedom for all Kenyans,” said Bishop Imathiu

The association added that Raila was as an Icon, Pan-Africanist and a relative of immense value and potential to the Odinga family.

GEMA called on the political class to rededicate themselves in the pursuit of democracy, justice, fairness and rule of law towards a better Kenya in support of Raila’s legacy.
