African climate and health experts urged to unite to tackle climate change threats

Health Principal Secretary Ms Mary Muthoni has urged African climate and health experts to unite and tackle the threats posed by climate change.

Speaking during the Africa Climate Change conference at the Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) the PS said climate and health experts have sounded the alarm on the urgent need for action.

She said global action on climate change is needed and that health experts have a vital role to play

“African experts unite for a comprehensive approach to tackle climate change’s health impact. It’s time for action to safeguard present and future generations in Africa,” she said.

Citing the Paris Agreement, she stressed on the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in promoting a holistic approach.

The PS said experts acknowledge climate change’s dire consequences, particularly in vulnerable regions.

She said events like Africa Climate Summit and COP28 have raised global dialogues on climate change and health whose discussions have gained momentum.

Muthoni called for a strong African stance on global health goals.

She highlighted five key rinciples: Ecosystem health, better access to health services, holistic thinking, a just transition, and strong partnerships.

On recommendations she cited, mitigation, adaptation, climate financing, and addressing climate loss and damage.

She urged governments to integrate climate health, boost capacity, and promote renewable energy in healthcare.

Developed countries were asked to cut emissions, increase climate financing, and support resilient health systems in Africa.In short.
