Embattled Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) vice-chair Juliana Cherera resigned on Monday only days ahead of mass action called by ODM leader Raila Odinga in her support and three others.
Her resignation follows that of the other commissioner Justus Nyang’aya and barely a week after President William Ruto appointed a tribunal to investigate the “Cherera four” who he described as rogue in a tweet.
With the two resignations, the spotlight turns on the other two commissioners – namely Francis Wanderi and Irene Masit – who are yet to make known their plans whether they intend to face the tribunal or not.
The four commissioners have been on a war with the chairman Wafula Chebukati after they disputed the 2022 presidential that declared Ruto the winner saying they had been manipulated and were opaque.
The matter proceeded to Supreme Court during the presidential petition where it was dismissed as hot air and wild goose chase effectively cooking the goose of the four commissioners as Ruto was declared the validly elected president.
In her resignation letter, Cherera said it was no longer tenable after failed efforts to deal with corporate governance issues in the electoral body.
She said since joining the commission, she had dispensed her duties diligently and meticulously and put a spirited effort in helping the commission deal with corporate governance issues under very difficult circumstances.
In the letter received by State House this morning, Cherera said as vice-chair, she had always advocated for a fair treatment and equal opportunity to all staff.
