DP Gachagua’s Sh 300,000 donation for a students’ end of year party rubs Kenyans the wrong way

By HARRIET MUGO

A donation of Sh 300,000 for an end of year party for Komarock Primary School in Nairobi by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has rubbed some Kenyans the wrong for coming days after he launched a nationwide famine appeal.

The DP promised candidates of Komarock Primary School in Embakasi 300,000 shillings for them to hold a party after the exams and an additional 100,000 shillings for the teachers.

“After you are through with your exams, I will give the headteacher 300,000 shillings so that after the exams you can come and have a bash to say farewell. We will also not leave the teachers behind; they have also done a very good job. I will leave 100,000 for them so that they too can celebrate a bit,” said Gachagua.

He promised this after he visited the school earlier today to monitor the progress of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations.

Some Kenyans immediately took on the DP terming his promise as a misplaced priority since the money could be used to help Kenyans who have been afflicted by the drought ravaging different parts of the country.

They told the DP to lead by example and to leave the students to concentrate with their examinations and allow the teachers to do their job.

Only recently Gachagua launched a Paybill number and urged Kenyans to give the little they can out of their salaries towards the move to help other Kenyans affected by drought.
