Kagure joins Kenyans in supporting move by Church leaders to ban politics at the alter

The move by leading churches to ban politicians from politicking during their services has received huge backing from Kenyans who said the decision was long overdue.

Prominent Nairobi business lady and Nairobi County gubernatorial aspirant Agnes Kagure said she was happy the Church was taking steps to keep politics off the alter.

She said he had been afraid that the clergymen were now going to report and work in Parliament given that politicians had completely taken over the pulpit.

“But Iam happy the Church is taking steps to keep politics off the alter. Kudos to PCEA’s Dr Waihenya and the team. I believe it is for the better,’’ said Kagure.

The Head of the Anglican Church Jackson Ole Sapit caused a stir on Sunday when he banned politicians from the alter during an event attended by among other ODM leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Western Kenya.

As a result Raila and a host of other politicians who had accompanied him during the ceremony where the first female Anglican Bishop was consecrated did not address the congregants like it has always been the case.

After the ban by ACK, the Catholic Church through Bishop Anthony Muheria also confirmed that they had banned politicking at their churches across the country.

The PCEA church has also confirmed that it has also banned politicians from politicking in their Churches sparking off a debate among Kenyans with majority supporting the decision by the churches.

The Church leaders have said they have no problem with politicians attending church services but they join the rest of the faithful, pray worship and leave without making speeches as had been the common practice.
