The political scene was set abuzz after prominent Mt Kenya leaders from different parties met to discuss how the region can achieve unity ahead of the 2022 general elections.
The meeting at Serena Hotel, in Nairobi brought together several MPs from Jubilee Party who met with Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, and The Service Party (TSP) leader and former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to find ways of how the region could speak in one voice.
It came a day after Deputy President William Ruto received a lukewarm reception in Nyeri on Sunday and after a low-key United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Nanyuki that declared UDA would not enter into any coalitions.
Among the MPs from Jubilee side were Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Murang’a Woman Rep Sabina Chege, Kiambu Town MP Jude Jomo, Mwea MP Kabinga wa Thayu among others.
The meeting also came a day after Kiunjuri blasted the Deputy President William Ruto for behaving as if he had already won the Mt Kenya votes.
Kiunjuri who has emerged as a leading light in searching for Mt Kenya unity warned Ruto that he is far from climbing the mountain telling him to expect a rough ride ahead including bad weather and snowy cold terrain.
It also came a day after Ruto received cold reception in Nyeri where a group of youths attempted to block his way to a church service in Kieni constituency.
Ruto also received a cold reception in Murang’a forcing his handlers to quickly organize a rally in Githurai which is densely populated and easy to marshal crowds.
The Monday meeting was first revealed by Kega who posted pictures on social media saying that he was having tea with his colleagues without revealing much details.
Kiunjuri had last week revealed that he was already in talks with Kega and many other leaders from Mt Kenya region when he said he would be spending the next three months pushing for Mt Kenya unity.
The former Agriculture CS was a prominent supporter of Ruto until they fell out when Ruto asked him to fold his party and join Ruto’s UDA as an ordinary member.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who is the party leader of Chama Cha Kazi was also asked to fold his party and join UDA as an ordinary member, but just like Kiunjuri they refused and went ahead to market their parties.
Kiunjuri has been on a marketing blitz to popularize his party and has mounted billboards across the country urging people to join as members.
