Kenya’s first Ogiek MP in history Sen Victor Prengey dies in a road accident in Nakuru

The ruling Jubilee Party was thrown into mourning after the death of nominated senator Victor Prengey who died on Monday night after a road accident in Nakuru County.

His death is a big blow to the Ogiek community – Kenya’s smallest tribe – as he was the first parliamentarian from the minority community in the country’s history and a big crusader of minority rights.

Prengey died after succumbing to injuries he sustained after his vehicle was involved in a road accident at Gioto area of Nakuru County on Monday night.

Nakuru County Police boss Beatrice Kiraguri said the Senator who was driving alone towards Kabarak passed away at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital where he was taken for treatment after the accident.

Nakuru County governor Lee Kinyanjui while mourning the departed senator said the country had lost a dynamic and dedicated servant of the people.

Kinyanjui said Prengey represented the Ogiek community in Senate and was a beacon of hope to many and that his elevation to the Senate was a major recognition to the rights of the Ogiek and other minority communities.

He described him as a quiet and humble leader, always conscious of the huge burden he carried as he sent his condolences to the family and the people of Marioshoni where he hailed from.

His colleagues led by nominated Senator Millicent Omanga sent condolences to the family and friends describing him as a great leader.

“We shall forever cherish your tireless efforts in fighting and protecting rights of the minority communities in our Nation. We have lost a great leader. My condolences to your family, friends and the entire Ogiek community,’’ she said.
