Drama as police cancel shrine cleansing and then approve it – all in a day

Police in Murang’a County canceled the cleansing of the Agikuyu shrine and immediately approved it exposing the high stakes surrounding the controversial coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

And the elders have declared that the ceremonies will go on as planned despite the intrigues and attempts to scuttle them and block the cleansing of the shrine – where Muturi was crowned as the Mt Kenya spokesperson

Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) and Kiama Kia Man had sent police notification of a prayer meeting and the cleansing of Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga over the controversial coronation of Muturi at the holy Agikuyu shrine.

The elders in their letter had also sought security indicating that they had selected 30 cultural priests who will cleanse the shrine while the rest of the people will meet at Mumbi grounds for prayers.

However in a letter signed by Nancy Kathure for OCS Murang’a on June 1, 2021 the police said they had not approved the meeting on security grounds and Covid-19 contravention protocols.

“Referring to your earlier request for public gathering and request for security, be notified that the meeting is not approved due to security reasons and Covid-19 contravention protocols. Kindly take note and adhere to the above directives,’’ said the letter.

The cancellation immediately threw the organisers into a spin as they sought intervention through Murang’a County governor Mwangi wa Iria and the decision was rescinded almost immediately.

The police then issued a second letter dated same day June 1, 2021 telling the elders that the earlier letter cancelling their meeting had been withdrawn and that their application was being considered.

National deputy Chairman of Kiama Kia Ma Michael Mugo blamed the drama on “renegade” group led by Capt Kungu Muigai as being behind the efforts to block the cleansing of the shrine that was desecrated by the political coronation.

“Muturi is being led by an imposter, so long as he was installed by the same cabal of elders who cursed SK Macharia at Gatanga, we shall not accept him. So long as Kungu continues to blatantly abuse and insult elders, we shall not accept JB,’’ said Mugo.

The coronation of Muturi at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga two weeks ago in an elaborate ceremony led by Capt Kungu sharply divided elders with KCE and Kiama Kiama disowning the event saying they were not consulted.

They observed that holding a political event at the shrine was an abomination and would result in disaster hence the need to urgently organize cleansing rites to restore its holiness.
