The GoGreen Achiver’s Award 2021 (GGA2021) is a project under the GoGreen Initiative by the Optiven Group Foundation. The GGA2021 seeks to highlight, promote and encourage best practices in environmental sustainability.
Gathii who served under the world renowned environmentalist the late Prof Mathai said the practices to be considered are linked to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He lists as one of his environment mentors as the late Prof. Miyawaki and also his wife Prof. Kazue – the celebrated Japanese professor who developed the Miyawaki method of afforestation that has been adopted world over for regeneration of forest canopies.
Gathii said he also planted hundreds of thousands of trees together with the late 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, the late Hon. Prof. Wangari Muta Maathai while serving as her Personal Assistant for 6 consecutive years.
He says he learnt a lot from Prof Mathai whom he describes as his destiny helper, mentor and mother.
“It is probably for these reason and many others that the panel of experts and judges nominated myself for this prestigious award. I am truly humbled and honoured. To be honest, nomination itself is so exciting,’’ said Gathii.
