Kenyan and British experts launch satellite-based system to monitor forest degradation

Kenyan and British experts have developed a smart system that is  delivering accurate, up-to-date deforestation data generated from satellites.

Through the system, forest rangers receive WhatsApp alerts notifying them if forests have been degraded which they then use to conduct follow-up investigations.

The deforestation alert system has been successfully piloted in Kwale County, and is now being rolled out by Kenya Forest Service throughout the country.

The innovative system was revealed when the British High Commissioner, Jane Marriott, visited Kwale County to view the UK-Kenya project on preventing deforestation.

She said UK is working with partners like Kenya to protect and restore forests and critical ecosystems, championing the transition towards sustainable, resilient and nature positive agriculture.

This is in the run up to the UK-hosted UN Climate talks (CoP26) in November this year, where Kenya’s climate goals will be front and centre.

The High Commissioner made the remarks when she visited the Kenya Forest Service Kwale Office according to the statement released by the UK Embassy in Kenya.
