We will not allow political coronation of Speaker Muturi at the holy Gikuyu shrine, vow elders

The storm caused by the planned coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi at the revered Gikuyu shrine continued to escalate with angry elders vowing to stop it from happening.

The National Chairman of Kiama Kia Ma Mr Ndungu Gaithuma dismissed the planned political coronation as a sacrilegious event that will not be allowed to happen.

“We will not allow it to happen. It is a sacrilegious event that has not been sanctioned by Kiama Kia Ma,’’ said Gaithuma.

Gaithuma said the elders purporting to arrange the event were acting on their own and had no mandate to carry out such a ceremony – saying only prayer and cultural events are allowed and not politics.

He said Kiama Kia Ma has no position of patron in its constitution and disowned Capt Kungu Muigai who is said to be behind the event presenting himself as the patron of the elders.

The planned coronation of Muturi as the spokesperson of Mt Kenya region has caused sharp divisions among the elders from both Kiama Kia Ma and the Kikuyu Council of Elders.

It follows a similar event held last month where Muturi was coronated as the spokesperson for Mt Kenya East in Embu before traveling to the Njuri Ncheke shrine in Meru to receive further blessings from the elders.

Muturi’s moves have been interpreted to mean that he is positioning himself to inherit President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Mt Kenya kingpin when the Head of State leaves office at the end of his term.

Other leaders from Mt Kenya region have also been making similar moves to position themselves as the political intrigues to succeed Uhuru continues in the region.
