Big blow to DP Ruto as Kiunjuri defects, calls for Mt Kenya unity outside of UDA

Deputy President William Ruto suffered another political blow after his key follower and former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri abandoned him and called for Mt Kenya unity.


Kiunjuri who has joined the group calling for Mt Kenya unity saying only with such unity that the interests of the region could be secured.


And in a dramatic turn of events, Kiunjuri said all leaders of political parties from Mt Kenya would meet to craft a unity pact.


Until recently Kiunjuri has been a key supporter of Ruto in Mt Kenya but has now abandoned him and is rooting for a coalition that will unite the region outside UDA.


Kiunjuri who is the leader of The Service Party (TSP)  is seeking to unite all leaders with political parties in Mt.Kenya.


He said  the mission is to ensure that the mountain vote as a block, a move he say will assure bargaining power.


UDA followers were rattled when Ruto in a televised interview said his party (UDA) would not join any coalition.


Kiunjuri says that  the mountain will be a force to reckon with, should all political parties within the region resolve to work as a team.


Leaders expected to join the Mt.Kenya unity talks include MP Moses Kuria of Chama Cha Kazi, Martha Karua of NARC-K, Governor Mwangi Wa Iria of Usawa kwa Wote Party, and Peter Kenneth of Kenya National Congress among others.


He noted that Mt. Kenya region has about 8 million registered voters which must count come come the 2022 presidential election.


Presidential hopefuls have been moving around the region shopping for their possible running mates with the hope that they would sway the voters their way.


Ruto’s influence in Mt Kenya has been on a steady decline and with declaration that he would not be forming coalitions has allienated his key supporters like Kiunjuri and Kuria who are party leaders.
