DP Gachagua’s date with destiny as MPs begin process of removing him

The process needed only 117 members of parliament to kick off but it gathered a staggering 291 legislators who appended their signatures.

Only 58 of the 349 MPs declined to support the proceedings that were allowed by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula.

The mover of the motion and Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse listed a littany of accusations against DP Gachagua.

He noted that during the Presidential debate, Rigathi Gachagua declared that he was worth 800 million but in a period of two years he is worth over Sh 5.2billion.

Mutuse said Kenyans are aware that Rigathi is paid slightly over 1 million meaning that for the last 2 years, the much he could have accumulated justly is about 24 million.

“I will demonstrate before Kenyans that he has properties to himself worth Ksh 5.2 billion. This is what we call unexplained assets,” said the MP.

Mutuse also accused Gachagua of having a role in June’s anti-government demonstrations, engaging in corruption, undermining government and promoting ethnically divisive politics.

Gachagua has denied all that and tried to paint a picture of man being hunted for being truthful in his affairs unlike his boss President Ruto.

With President Ruto having included the opposition in his so called broad-based government, the impeachment motion is expected to sail through both houses easily.

The tabling of the impeachment proceedings is the climax of the fallout between him and the President – who has remain mum over the matter.

But what caught the eye was the high number of MPs a total of 291 who signed the petition representing 83% of 349 members while only 2/3 =66% was is required to carry the impeachment.

Observers are waiting to see whether all the 291 members will be courageous enough to vote for the impeachment motion with claims that several have already developed cold feet.
