After heavy backlash, security has been beefed up for Members of Parliament (MPs) who signed the petition to impeach the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.
Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula allowed the tabling of the motion after 291MPs signed the petition against the required minimum of 117MPs, with a staggering 83% of the MPs signing to send DP Gachagua home.
But several MPs from Kenya region declined to sign the petition despite what they describe as heavy pressure from high placed State agents.
Among them was all the elected Murang’a County MPs led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro apart from the County Woman Rep Betty Maina who is married in Nyeri by Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi. Betty and Sabina Chege (nominated) are the only MPs from Murang’a County who signed the impeachment motion.
The MPs immediately asked the government to ensure that their security was beefed up saying they were dealing with a heavy issue.
In Murang’a the MPs who declined to sign the anti-Gachagua motion criticised their colleagues for allowing what they called outsiders to come and divide the region and to betray one of their own.
They compared them to sell out who sold Mau Mau fighters to the colonialists and urged them to reconsider their stand and not to vote for the motion once it was tabled in Parliament next week.
“It is a shame and a sad day for our region that our elected leaders have failed the electorate and brought shame to them. This freedom was won by blood of our selfless forefathers. That a leader can be scared to sign to fire the person who is fighting for him and Mt Kenya region,” said the Murang’a MPs in a statement.
They said it was a shame that many MPs from the region signed the motion before they even read or seen, that they saw it when it was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday for the first time.
