Deadly crash: 14 killed as lorry overturns in Lodwar

Fourteen people have died and 12 others seriously injured after the lorry they were travelling in overturned in Lodwar.

Police say the driver of the lorry swerved to avoid hitting a camel but lost control of the Isuvu lorry that crash into a culvert on the Lodwar-Kakuma road.

A total of 26 passengers and assorted goods were onboard before the fatal accident.

The 12 passengers who sustained various injuries were taken to Lodwar County and Referral Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the motor vehicle was being driven towards Kakuma general direction, and upon reaching the location of the accident, there was a camel that was crossing the road from left to right and the driver swerved to the right to avoid hitting it.

Unfortunately, due to the heavy weight of the vehicle from the goods and the passengers onboard, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

As a result, the vehicle overturned and landed in a culvert on the right side of the road occasioning the injuries to the passengers and the vehicle extensively damaged.

The National Police Service has appealed to all motorists to excersise extreme caution on the roads and adhere to traffic rules.
