As DP Gachagua fights in the Senate, campaigns to replace him are in top gear sharply dividing Mt Kenya

A group of women from Kirinyaga County have launched a campaign to have their Governor Anne Waiguru replace embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who is expected to be impeached later in the week.

A day earlier another group of women from Murang’a County also kicked off a campaign for Waiguru, saying even though she was governor of Kirinyaga, she was married in Murang’a and that it was time a woman was named Deputy President.

They reminded President Ruto that he had promised to have a woman as his deputy in 2027 but since the opportunity has presented itself earlier, he needs to fulfil his promise.

The entry of Waiguru into the race has angered residents of Mt Kenya East including their MPs who revealed that they impeached Gachagua at the National Assembly because they were promised that one of their own and Interior CS Kithure Kindiki would be the automatic replacement.

Kindiki who has started a high profile campaign for the seat that saw him endorsed by over 40MPs from Mt Kenya West and later gathered all the Mt Kenya MCAs at a hotel in Murang’a appears to have developed a cold feet and is no longer lobbying.

Sources says that he went slow after State operatives placed before him what he considered as difficult demands he was expected to meet before he could secure the seat.

The same seat had been promised on Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro who even operated a chopper and conducted several harambees outside Mt Kenya but has also gone slow and even distanced himself from the current impeachment of DP Gachagua.

Mt Kenya is currently sharply divided as nearly every county try to lobby for one of their own to be appointed Deputy President.

Murang’a governor who had also been mentioned as a possible replacement has shot down the offer saying he was busy working on his program in Murang’a even though residents also warned him against accepting the offer.
