Defiant Speaker Muturi to attend coronation amid mounting protests, resistance

Defiant National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi will attend tomorrow’s coronation ceremony at the holy Agikuyu shrine despite causing a raging storm, protests and resistance.

An close aide to Muturi said the it all systems go and that the event slated to start at 10:00am will go on as planned and have written to police to provide security.

The aide said since the elders that invited Muturi for the players have not called off the ceremony he will be attending as planned.

“The elders that invited Muturi have not called off the prayers. Tukutane huko Jumamosi,” the aide said curtly reply to a question whether the event will go on amid the controversy it has generated.

And as Muturi prepares to go to Mukuwere wa Nyagathanga, Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has banned the event placing yet another hurdle for Muturi to clear.

Wa Iria said the shrine is in the custody of Murang’a County government and that it will not be available for use for a political event, saying the county has not been involved or consulted.

He said the shrine is for prayers and cultural events and not for political activities least of all coronations.

Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru also waded into the controversy warning Muturi that such ceremonies will not give him an upper hand in the Uhuru succession since the Gema community never had cultural kingpins and spokespersons.

She warned Muturi not to attempt to inherit Uhuru while he was still on the seat.

“Uhuru Kenyatta has not vacated his seat and culturally we do not inherit one when they are still alive,” said Waiguru. It is to be noted that Waiguru has also been meeting elders just like Muturi is doing.
