Death of an icon. Mukami Kimathi, wife of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi dies aged 101

“We live to celebrate her indelible legacy and that of other freedom fighters who shed blood for the freedom we enjoy today,” ____ Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Mukami Kimathi, wife of celebrated Mau Mau freedom war fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi has died aged 101.

Her death after a century brings the curtain down to an era that symbolises the struggle for Kenya’s independence from the murderous colonial government and the post indepence struggles of former freedom fighters.

Mukami’s daughter Evelyn Kimathi confirmed her death adding that her body is lying at the Lee Funeral Home.

She said the freedom war icon fell sick at home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital where she was taken.

Many remnants of the freedom war still live in abject poverty and Mukami together with her daughter Evelyn have been on the forefront promoting their interests.

After the news of her death messages of condolences to the family were received in the hundreds with many praising her role in championing the interets of the Mau Mau war remnants and their offsprings.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua while mourning Mukami, said she was a symbol of defiance, mother of the struggle for independence and that the country is greatly indebted to her valour and grit. She remains an inspiring figure to all those in leadership.

Rest In Peace Mukami Kimathi.
