Alex Gathii: The Cow Prophet Transforming Africa’s Dairy Industry

Tetu, Nyeri County – In an inspiring story of innovation and leadership, Alex Gathii Gitonga, Managing Director of Tanolope Consultancy Limited, has been hailed as a transformative figure in the global dairy industry.

Recently recognized by International Dairy Federation President Gilles Froment as a “Cow Prophet,” Gathii’s contributions are reshaping the landscape of dairy farming across Africa.

In a remarkable achievement, Gathii has received the Global Dairy Recognition 2024 as “The Cow Prophet” from Kenya. This accolade highlights his significant impact on the dairy sector, with endorsements from notable figures further emphasizing his accomplishments.

Dr. Tony Elumelu, founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, expressed his pride in Gathii’s recognition, stating, “Kudos, champion. Keep moving.” As an alumnus of the foundation, Gathii’s journey has been celebrated by those who support entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa.

Margaret Kibbogy, Managing Director of the Kenya Dairy Board, also recognized Gathii’s deservingness of the IDF accolade. She noted that he has been instrumental in championing Kenya’s dairy industry, successfully doubling the country’s milk production at the lowest cost possible.

Kibbogy highlighted Gathii’s role as the Lead Consultant in developing Kenya’s Dairy GMP Manual, a crucial blueprint currently being implemented by the Kenya Dairy Board and KEBS. “With such immense contribution and experience, Alex Gathii’s recognition by IDF is an icing on the cake,” she remarked.

With a rich background as a Certified Cowsignals Master Trainer and a USAID Champion of Change, Gathii has emerged as a leading livestock nutritionist and cow therapist.

His groundbreaking work focuses on enhancing dairy production and sustainability, making a profound impact on the lives of farmers and the industry at large.

Before this recognition, the International Dairy Federation (IDF) had received major endorsements from Cowsignals International in the Netherlands, highlighting Gathii’s impactful work in Africa over the last decade, which has spanned more than 12 African countries.

Under Gathii’s stewardship, Tanolope has developed a suite of globally recognized tools designed to double milk production at minimal costs.

These innovative tools—the KPI’s Tool, 24 Hours Tool, and Cowsignals Tool—have been modeled after successful practices from New Zealand’s dairy industry and tailored to meet the unique challenges faced by African farmers.

“These tools are simple, easy to implement, and almost costless,” Gathii explains, emphasizing their accessibility to farmers across the continent.

His approach not only boosts productivity but also empowers local communities, enhancing food security and economic stability.

In a remarkable achievement, Gathii is leading a team of experts in a transformative project that aims to turn Botswana from one of Africa’s major milk importers into a significant exporter.

This Dairy Transformation story is one that resonates deeply with the International Dairy Federation, showcasing the potential for growth and success in the sector.

As Gathii continues to champion advancements in dairy farming, his vision for a thriving, sustainable dairy industry in Africa is becoming a reality.

With the support of initiatives like USAID and the International Dairy Federation, the potential for growth and transformation in this sector has never been more promising.

In the words of Froment, Gathii is indeed a “Cow Prophet,” leading the charge toward a brighter future for Africa’s dairy industry.
