Mt Kenya region to produce a presidential candidate in 2022, leaders resolve

A high profile meeting of Mt Kenya leaders including six governors has resolved that the region will produce a presidential candidate in 2022.

The leaders including a Cabinet Secretary said the region has enough votes to be a front runner in the presidential contest.

Rattled by the coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as the Mt Kenya spokesman three weeks ago, the leaders said only through unity that their big numbers will count.

It was a big show of strength and unity as governors Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Mutahi Kahiga (Nyeri), Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), Mwangi Wa Iria (Muranga), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru),  Kimemia (Nyandarua), Nyaga Wambora (Embu) Agriculture CS Peter Munya, former Kiambu governor William Kabogo and BBI Secretariat co-chair Dennis Waweru met at Luisoi Resort in Nyeri county.

They were joined by scores of other leaders who included MPs, MCAs, elders, women and youth.
Waiguru said they will seek unity of the mountain first before agreeing on the presidential candidate.
Wambora and Kabogo echoed the same sentiments that were also contained in the resolutions they read at the end of the meeting.

It was a rare show of unity in Mt Kenya as the leaders met to chart regions political and economic destiny.

It emerged that contrary to popular opinion Mt Kenya will be fielding a presidential in 2022 with a big chance of success.

They said they were discussing areas of common interest to people of Mt Kenya among them strengthening and mending fences of leaders irrespective of political persuasion.

This is the second unity meeting by the leaders after the initial one was held at Panafric Hotel two weeks ago. The Nyeri meeting however brought in more representatives and was much bigger and more impressive.

It brought in mainly forces lined up against Deputy President William Ruto – whose aim is to lock him out of Mt Kenya region

The unity move is a big blow to Ruto’s attempt to have a political grip on the region using his United Democratic Party (UDA). They resolved that the Mt.Kenya group will remain united and confront the next general election as one.

They said President Uhuru Kenyatta must be respected by all leaders and remains the spokesman and the political leader of the region.

It was aleo resolved that Mt.Kenya council of elders to meet  other communities to strengthen the bond  and unity of GEMA. The next meeting will be held in Meru
