Kikuyu Council of Elders disown planned coronation of Speaker Muturi at the holy Agikuyu shrine

The Chairman of Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) Wachira Kiago has distanced the cultural organization with the planned coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as the Mt Kenya spokesman.

A section of elders have announced an elaborate ceremony slated for the coming weekend to coronate Muturi as the region’s spokesman at a shrine in Murang’a County believed to be the original home of the Agikuyu community.

The ceremony has created sharp divisions among the elders in the region with some supporting and others opposing.

Those opposing have said conducting a political event was sacrilegious and would lead to disaster and vowed to do everything possible to stop the event from happening, while those supporting say it is an opportune time for the region to get a spokesman.

On Tuesday, Kiago denied reports that Kikuyu Council of Elders were part of those organizing the controversial event saying they were never consulted and they do not support the event.

Kiama Kia Ma national chairman Ndungu Gaithuma has also distanced the elders’ council from the ceremony saying those organizing are not their members and should not invoke their names.

Political analysts say Muturi is trying to put himself in a vantage position to inherit President Uhuru Kenyatta as the next Mt Kenya kingpin. He has already been installed as the spokesperson for Mt Kenya East by both the Embu and Meru elders.

Muturi is said to be currently undergoing a secret ritual ahead of the coronation slated for this weekend at the Agikuyu shrine of Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga.
