Rift Valley MPs threaten to impeach CS Moses Kuria over the GMO maize importation scandal

By HARRIET MUGO

A section of MPs from the Rift Valley have threatened to impeach Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria over the scandalous importation of GMO maize.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, the lawmakers led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei opposed the importation of maize from abroad, calling on CS Kuria to stop the process immediately.

“As MPs from the maize growing regions, we want to know why ships are already anchoring in the Port of Mombasa without due process,” Cherargei said. .

South Pokot Member of Parliament David Pkosing said that they will collect signatures from Wednesday to remove Kuria if he does not change his position.

“He will be the first Cabinet Secretary to leave office. We will dismantle him. We will collect signatures if he does not change,” he said.

CS Kuria said on Monday that the legal notice for the importation of Genetically Modified Maize by millers would be issued this week.

However, even before the Government gave the legal authority to import the maize a ship with 10,000 tonnes of the commodity docked at the port of Mombasa.

The implication is that the order to bring in the maize was issued long before a decision to import was issued suggesting vested interest.
