Shock as man shoots wife, then commits suicide

There was shock in Kiambu town when a man shot his pregnant wife dead before turning the gun on self and killing himself in a bizarre incident linked to domestic problems.

Police reports indicate that  man Jonathan Mukundi Gachunga 42 – a licensed fire arm holder shot dead his wife Philomena Njeri aged about 30 before killing himself using the same gun.

It emerged that the couple had separated for four months and the wife had just returned to their matrimonial home in Kiambu town on Monday before the deaths were discovered on Tuesday evening.

It was after the couple failed to wake up on Tuesday the whole day that workers and friends got worried and police were called at around 6:30pm where the door that was locked from the inside was broken down to allow access.

Initial investigations revealed that Njeri was fatally shot on the head and that Gachunga also shot himself on the head.

The deaths were discovered after Gachunga’s friend Robert Njuguna became suspicious after his calls to Gachunga were not answered. He picked up police officers and when they arrived at Gachunga’s house, they found it was locked from the inside.

The front door was broken and Njuguna and the officers found the lifeless bodies of Gachunga and Njeri lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

Investigations have been launched to find out what may have led to the tragedy while the bodies were removed to Kenyatta Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
