Three workers injured as bridge collapses in Kangemi, Nairobi

Three workers were injured one seriously when the retaining wall to a bridge they were constructing collapsed covering them with debris in Kangemi, Nairobi.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the retaining wall collapsed injuring the workers, and quick rescue mission ensured there were no fatalities.

Director General Eng Peter Mundinia said two of the workers suffered minor injuries while the third one was transferred to hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

Mundinia said there were no fatalities as it was earlier feared, saying police were called on immediately and that the accident was caused by a minor slope collapse with no serious injuries to the workers and other third parties.

He said the workers were fixing the reinforcement for the retaining wall when the cut soil on the back collapsed.

“Three workers were injured. Two with minor injuries. The other one taken to Hospital,” said Mundinia

A further statement by the agency further said all the workers on the site have been accounted for and work to secure the site is ongoing. The worker who was rushed to hospital is said to be in a stable condition.

“KeNHA regrets this unfortunate incident and is keen to ensure that safety is a priority in all road projects,” said the statement.

The accident occurred amid  ongoing works along the James Gichuru – Rironi road project at Kangemi where the soil around the retaining wall for Kangemi Bridge collapsed.
