Days after he was declared the new Mt Kenya kingpin by a group of MPs, Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki steered clear of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment debate and instead called for national unity.
And as he visited Nyandarua County to inspect road projects, in Nairobi, Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana dramatically tabled a censure motion in the Senate as the planned impeachment of DP Gachagua gains fresh impetus.
Speaking in Kinangop, Nyandarua county Prof Kindiki said the government is accelerating the programme to complete road projects whose construction had stalled during President Uhuru’s administration due to funding constraints.
Prof Kindiki said, as the completion work was ongoing, the government will initiate new road projects crucial to the movement of people and goods thereby expediting Kenya’s economic transformation.
He was accompanied by Cabinet colleague Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport); Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua; Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku, other elected leaders and members of local community witnessed the resumption of fully funded works on 40.5km Engineer-Mbiginano-Gathara-Tulaga-Mbirithi-Chuma Road Project.
Prof Kindiki is locked in a battle of controlling the vote-rich Mt Kenya region after a section of Members of Parliament from the region endorsed him as the region’s kingpin and the link to the National Government in a significant political development.
Allies of DP Gachagua who is the self-declared Mt Kenya kingpin immediately interpreted the move as meant to isolate and edge him out of power and immediately went on the offensive claiming there was a plan to fire him and install Prof Kindiki in his place.
Majority leader Kimani Ichungwa has denied plans to impeach the DP but the tabling of a censure motion in the Senate today has given credence to claims that the impeachment plot is still underway and that Mungatana’s move was just testing the waters.
