A defiant Deputy President William Ruto says he a man on a mission to change Kenya and would not retreat nor surrender after his boss President Uhuru challenged him to resign instead of rocking the government from within.
At the same time he claimed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was a dangerous document that would have created an imperial presidency.
He said he had fought against imperial presidency for 30 years and said he was happy that the courts had put a stop to the BBI.
“If there was a much more dangerous constitutional change it was the BBI, because it was going to roll back all the gains we have made, we fought for almost 30 years against an imperial presidency, the BBI was going to install an imperial presidency in a big way,’’ said Ruto.
Ruto who was speaking in Taita Taveta during a funeral said the President was going to control parliament by appointing MPs to the executive and also control the judiciary through appointment of the judiciary ombudsman.
On the challenge by President Uhuru to resign instead of rocking the government from within, Ruto apologized “to those he had wronged” but said he had decided he would not retreat until Kenya is changed.
He said those without jobs must get jobs first before they add more positions for the political class and that those with small businesses must be helped before sharing of power as leaders.
While asking Ruto to resign if he is unhappy, President Uhuru noted that the DP was speaking from both ends of the mouth praising government when it suited him and criticizing it when he needed political mileage.
He said a man of principal would resign and go and take his agenda to the people instead of throwing stones inside the same house he was in.
